On July 1, at 11:00 a.m., journalist Germán Gerardo Valecillo Jr. and cameraman Jorge Posas, from channel 45TV, were murdered in La Ceiba, department of Atlántida, 393 kilometers from Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras.
According to the Honduran newspaper La Prensa, both were inside a vehicle when they were surprised by two subjects on a motorcycle who shot them to death. The reporter was the son of renowned journalist German Valecillo, who worked for many years for the Televicentro news program.
Dagoberto Rodríguez, president of the Honduran Association of Journalists, expressed his solidarity with the victims’ families. He also made a call, on behalf of the Association, demanding the investigation of the case.
Rodríguez pointed out that between 2001 and 2020, 84 journalists and communicators have been murdered in Honduras. The rate of impunity is 93%.
Fundamedios stands in solidarity with the families and friends of the reporters. The organisation joins the call of the Honduran College of Journalists to demand a clear investigation and to prevent the crime from going unpunished.
Asesinan a periodista y camarógrafo en zona costera de Honduras
A las 11:00 de este 1 de julio, el periodista Germán Gerardo Valecillo Jr. y el camarógrafo Jorge Posas, del canal 45TV, fueron asesinados en La Ceiba, departamento de Atlántida, a 393 kilómetros de Tegucigalpa, capital de Honduras.
Según publica el diario La Prensa de Honduras, ambos se encontraban dentro de un vehículo cuando fueron sorprendidos por dos sujetos en moto que los dispararon hasta matarlos. El reportero era hijo del reconocido periodista German Valecillo, quien trabajó por muchos años para el noticiero de Televicentro.
Dagoberto Rodríguez, presidente del Colegio de Periodistas de Honduras, expresó su solidaridad con los familiares de las víctimas. Además, hizo un llamado, a nombre del gremio, exigiendo la investigación del caso.
Rodríguez puntualizó que entre 2001 y 2020, en Honduras han sido asesinados 84 periodistas y comunicadores. La tasa de impunidad es del 93%.
