The owner of the news portal Prioridad Máxima, José Castillo, was murdered with a knife on the morning of June 11. The crime took place at the door of his home, located in the El Campanario neighborhood, municipality of Cajeme, state of Sonora (northwest Mexico).
According to local media, Castillo was attacked by an unknown man and was left lying on the sidewalk. The reporter had more than 25 years’ experience in the media where he mainly covered the red story. The authorities are investigating whether the incident is directly related to journalism.
A month ago, Fundamedios reported the murder of Jorge Miguel Armenta Avalos, owner and director of the newspaper El Tiempo and Medios Obson. The reporter was shot dead on 16 May by unknown assailants as he was leaving a Chinese food restaurant in the centre of the city of Obregon, Sonora.
The Mexican National Human Rights Commission condemned the murder of the communicator on Twitter and called on the authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly.
Fundamedios condemns this murder. It calls on the authorities to launch an immediate investigation and prevent a new case from going unsolved. The organisation expresses its solidarity with the family members and the Mexican trade union for this loss which, once again, mourns journalism.
Asesinan a otro periodista en el estado de Sonora, México
El propietario del portal de noticias Prioridad Máxima, José Castillo, fue asesinado con un arma blanca la mañana de este 11 de junio. El crimen se produjo en la puerta de su domicilio, ubicado en el barrio El Campanario, municipio de Cajeme, estado de Sonora (noroeste de México).
Según medios locales, Castillo fue atacado por un desconocido y quedó tendido en la vereda. El reportero tenía más de 25 años de experiencia en los medios de comunicación donde cubría, principalmente, crónica roja. Las autoridades investigan si el hecho tiene relación directa con el ejercicio periodístico.
Hace un mes, Fundamedios reportó el asesinato de Jorge Miguel Armenta Ávalos, propietario y director del periódico El Tiempo y de Medios Obson. La Comisión Nacional de Derechos Humanos en México condenó el asesinato del comunicador en Twitter e hizo un llamado a las autoridades a investigar el hecho de forma exhaustiva.
