On May 29, CNN correspondent Omar Jimenez and his news crew of Bill Kirkos and Leonel Mendez were arrested in Minneapolis, Minnesota, while covering live a protest against the murder of George Floyd. The African-American citizen died on 25 May as a result of excessive police force. Two of the members of the journalistic team are of Latino origin. Jiménez is also African American.
According to CNN, they were arrested by the police because they were supposedly warned to move and did not do so. A video uploaded to the website shows the exact moment when Jiménez asks the police why he is being detained, when minutes earlier he had shown total openness to cooperate with any necessary instructions.

The reporter, producer and cameraman were released after the incident. However, the TV station issued a statement on the matter. «A CNN journalist and his production crew were arrested this morning in Minneapolis for doing their job, despite identifying themselves, a clear violation of their First Amendment rights. Minnesota authorities, including the Governor, must release the three CNN employees immediately,» it said.
Fundamedios expresses its rejection of this excess of authority on the part of the Minneapolis Police, in contravention of the right to freedom of the press provided for in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.
The news team was covering for the third consecutive day the protests rejecting the racism and excessive use of force that caused Floyd’s death. A video broadcast on social networks shows the moment when the citizen was approached by a group of police officers who were on the trail of a suspected counterfeiter. It shows a police officer immobilizing Floyd as he was getting out of the vehicle and pressing his knee against his neck until he suffocated and died.

Este 29 de mayo, el corresponsal de CNN, Omar Jiménez y su equipo periodístico compuesto por Bill Kirkos y Leonel Mendez, fueron detenidos en Minneapolis, estado de Minnesota, mientras cubrían en vivo una protesta por el asesinato de George Floyd. El ciudadano afroamericano murió el 25 de mayo a consecuencia del exceso de fuerza policial. Dos de los miembros del equipo periodístico son de origen latino. Jiménez además es afroamericano.
Según narraron a CNN, los uniformados los detuvieron porque les habían advertido, supuestamente, que se cambiaran de lugar y no lo hicieron. Un video subido al portal del medio muestra el momento exacto en que Jiménez pregunta a la Policía por qué está siendo detenido, cuando minutos antes había mostrado total apertura a colaborar con las indicaciones que sean necesarias.
El reportero, el productor y el camarógrafo fueron liberados después del incidente. Sin embargo, la cadena televisiva emitió un comunicado al respecto. “Un periodista de CNN y su equipo de producción fueron arrestados esta mañana en Minneapolis por hacer su trabajo, a pesar de identificarse, una clara violación de sus derechos de la Primera Enmienda. Las autoridades de Minnesota, incluido el Gobernador, deben liberar a los tres empleados de CNN de inmediato”, se exigió.
Fundamedios expresa su rechazo a este exceso de autoridad por parte de la Policía de Minneapolis, contraviniendo el derecho a la libertad de prensa previsto en la Primera Enmienda de la Constitución de Estados Unidos.
El equipo periodístico cubría por tercer día consecutivo las protestas que rechazan el racismo y el excesivo uso de la fuerza que causaron la muerte de Floyd. Un video difundido en redes sociales muestra el momento en que el ciudadano fue abordado por un grupo de policías que estaban tras la pista de un sospechoso de falsificación. Se observa cuando un oficial inmoviliza a Floyd al bajarlo del vehículo y presiona su rodilla contra el cuello hasta su asfixia y posterior muerte.
