Facing reality, women earn less

Just for being a woman, you get paid less.

 

Despite education level, sector, or country all throughout the world women earn less than their male colleagues. The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that women on average continue to be paid about 20% less than men.

The salary dierence between women and men is more impa when motherhood enters the picture. AAUW calls it the Motherhood Penalty

Latinas earn as low as 45% less

In the U.S. women earn on average 23% less than white males. But Latinas are at the bottom of the ladder. Which means they make $0.55 for every $1 a white, non-Hispanic man makes.

A higher education or degree does not matter for Latin

Latina journalists earn on average 37% less

The same thing happens in almost all newsrooms.

For over 40 years of work Latinas have lost out on more than $ MILLION

AAUW has done the math and when we compare women’s median salaries over 40 years with white men’s median salaries over the same we end up with these shocking lifetime losses:

Know the worth of your community and language. Here´s some data.

Do your homework, Knowing the market, researching the company and position, and know the people will hire you.

Important subjects to contemplate:

  • Get to know the market in your city and state.
  • Investigate well how this newsroom application compares to other companies.
  • What does the market pay for that position?
  • What is the position worth?
  • Know the range of the position.
  • Know how the organization is rated in gender equality.
  • Review who the company’s directors are.
  • Are there women in director positions?
  • Are there Latinx in high level positions?
  • Is there a union?
  • Unions have established ranks and more than likely have equal pay practices.
  • In case there are a few number of women or Latinas in positions of power, prepare for a complex negotiation.  Know the person who will interview you.
  • Use your investigative skills to research everything.

  • Glass door
  • LinkedIn
  • The business sections of your local newspapers
  • Business publications or other publications specic to your industry
  • Industry compensation surveys
  • Ask other journalists

Know the federal and state laws

  • Get familiar with the laws.
  • There are states which have introduced laws where it is illegal to ask for previous salaries.

Know your value and expectations

  • Human resource experts appreciate when candidates know their value and know how their skills can help better the compa they could potentially join.
  • Review the position and demonstrate how being bicultural and bilingual helps enrich the newsroom.
  • Prepare answers that show you think strategically, that you are creative and know how to solve problems.
  • Prepare examples of your life where you overcame challenges.
  • Even if you don’t have journalistic experience whatever previous job you may have had is valuable, especially if you know h present it strategically.

Prepare your value statement

  • Your value statement is expressed through your achievements and how you used your abilities and skills to get results.
  • Have clear ideas that contain: accomplishments, skills and results.
  • Know your worth.
  • Know which of your skills better t the position.
  • Analyze what additional value you bring.
  • In what way will hiring you help the company?
  • What access to new and important sources do you bring?
  • Your double culture brings fundamentally dierent abilities. You understand diverse behaviors and communities.  Show the value you have by being the voice, eyes and interpreter for communities.

Watch your attitude for the interview

  • Maintain a physical position which shows a condent attitude.
  • Don’t slouch too much or cross your arms.
  • Be cordial, open and talk to your interviewer.
  • In an interview two people get to know each other.
  • Personal stories can be interesting but professional ones are the most important.
  • Mange all negotiations like a conversation not a confrontation.
  • Have a proper tone of voice.
  • Have an open mind.

How to negotiate once you have a job offer

  • For every position there are salary ranges. Negotiators usually oer the lowest amount.
  • Check if the amount oered matches with the information you have researched.
  • Prepare your strategies with all the information you have and your value statement.
  • Think about the objections your negotiator may raise. Think of various answers with documented information, reason your thoughts and show your professional value.
  • Your personal experience is not a reason to pay you more. Your professional skills, discipline, strategic thought process, foc results and capacity to reach good goals are reasons to pay you more.
  • Orally practice your conversations with the negotiator.
  • Practice controlling your emotions.
  • Remember to keep silent after expressing your rational arguments to give them time to absorb and think about them.

  • Have condence in yourself.
  • Have a positive attitude.
  • Control your internal dialogue and any negative thought.
  • Remember it is a conversation not a confrontation.
  • Getting to this point means they consider you a valuable person.
  • “Traza la cancha” and reconrm exactly the functions you must perform according to your conversations. If they ask you to translate, ask for a separate rate.
  • If the job oer does not match what the market pays for these functions, respectfully let the employer know that from your research the salary range for that position if higher and that you bring an added cultural value.
  • Listen carefully to your negotiator and build intelligently on their arguments to be the person they need in that position.
  • If the company cannot or will not oer a higher salary nd compensation in other areas of the contract.
  • Do not accept the salary until you see the whole benets package.
  • Every contract comes with a set of conditions, negotiate the best for you: life insurance, mobilization assistance, training, mentoring, vacation days, flexible hours, telecommuting and prospects for future advancements.
