«With Trump in office, we are going to maintain the best relations with the United States and with Biden it will be the same or better,» said the Ecuadorian ambassador in Washington DC, Ivonne Baki, in a discussion organized by Fundamedios on the afternoon of this November 4 under the name of «Ecuador Case: the results of the elections in the United States and their regional impact», who was interviewed by Dagmar Thiel, director of Fundamedios USA.

«Biden is not a communist and neither is Donald Trump a white supremacist,» emphasized Ambassador Baki when questioned about it and pointed out that good relations with Ecuador will continue, whoever wins, because there are policies in the United States. institutions, although in Ecuador progress has to be made in this regard.

During the discussion, the scenarios on who may be the winner of the US elections were analyzed, as well as the effects of the economic crisis affecting the world and the region as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the new agreements trade, how the election results are projected and how that would affect Ecuador’s relations with the United States.

The Ambassador highlighted that the elections reveal a deep political polarization, unprecedented in that country. «The first time I feel that I am not in the United States in an election, they are so different and unique that until now it is not possible to know who will be the new president,» said the Ambassador.

When asked about the diplomatic relations between Ecuador and the United States, Ambassador Baki replied, «I thank President Lenin Moreno for promoting the relations that we now have between Ecuador and the United States, since Ecuador’s first commercial partner is the United States.»

He added that so far Ecuador has obtained many benefits from this good moment in the relations between the two countries. The Ambassador referred to the fact that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) «gave exceptional access to financing» due to Donald Trump’s decision to give special attention to Ecuador, due to the difficult situation in the country aggravated by the impact of the COVID-19.

Ivonne Baki pointed out that important changes have been made in the diplomatic relations between Ecuador and the United States that have focused on the objective that Ecuadorians achieve a good quality of life, so that they no longer seek the American dream, that is, to migrate in a irregular to the US He also stressed that the private sector should be involved in trade deals. With this they will be able to explain to the people the importance of maintaining these agreements that improve the country’s economy and generate a better quality of life.

According to the ambassador, Ecuador should be more pragmatic on investment issues and less bureaucratic so that investors have the confidence to invest money in the country. But, to achieve this, he added that clear laws must be made, which have to do with the economy and the sustainable development of companies.

For the Ambassador, it is important to take into account the 2021 elections in Ecuador. She says that it is necessary to know who will be the new president to continue maintaining political relations between the two countries. In addition, he said that the current trade agreements will be maintained if Biden or Trump win in the United States elections. The real problem, Baki analyzed, are the political changes that exist in Ecuador and the new actor that the Government is going to assume.
